The Rennie Lake Association has been made aware that some members have received a letter from Meridian Land Group informing them that ReefWorks LLC , an oil company, is petitioning the State of Michigan for approval to:
1. Create a single legal/operational entity called a 'Unit' out of the existing oil wells on 666 acres of the original Camp Greilick property outside the new county park.
2. Conduct Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) in the Unit.
The Members who received this letter 'own an interest underlying the lands immediately adjacent and contiguous to the lands surrounding the proposed Unit'.

We are aware of concerns expressed online that the project involves fracking. According to our research, EOR is a process that excludes fracking under Michigan law (see Part 615 – Supervisor of Wells (NREPA, MCL 324.61501 et seq.). The petition summary confirms this where it states the EOR will inject dry natural gas into the depleted oil reservoir lying more than a mile underground. Our initial impression is that this project poses negligible risks to the waters of the aquifer supplying Rennie Lake and our wells due to the use of natural gas which is frequently found in association with oil and due to the depth and types of rock overlying the oil reservoir. Nonetheless, we have requested a copy of the petition to more fully understand and evaluate the proposal and we will be requesting confirmation from EGLE that any well casing and surface spill prevention devices are present and in working order.
